During the weeks surrounding Veterans Day, rows of flags can be seen decorating Ottawa's Main Street and around City Park.

The first World War ravaged the landscape of Western Europe. Red poppies began growing in the aftermath on battlefields. Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae spotted clusters of poppies while tending the wounded after the Second Battle of Ypres. McCrae went on to the channel the voice of the fallen when he wrote "In Flanders Fields".
